Description:
The Flemish School: Artists Active in Flanders During the 15th and 16th Centuries: This docent-led talk will explore some of the most prominent Northern Renaissance artists active primarily in the cities of Brudges and Ghent during the 15th and 16th centuries. Painters such as Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, and others were known for their significant contributions to the advancement of oil paintings, capturing realism, and developing single perspective. The typical subject matter of the Flemish School was often religious in nature, but small beautifully executed portraits were also common. The Timken is fortunate to have works by three of the most significant Flemish masters, Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Petrus Christus, and Pieter Claeissens the Elder. Their work and that of other prominent Flemish artists from this period will be discussed in this presentation. This virtual Timken Museum of Art event will take place over Zoom.
